1994 in New York City's East Village -What do you get when you cross a Classically-trained, horse-wran- gling violinist from Kansas with a downtown New York City guitarist from Cape Cod wlth a passion for early country and Western swing? Thirty years on..it's the Hot Club of Cowtown!2024 marks three decades since guitarist Whit Smith and violinist Elana James met through a classified ad in the music section of New York City's legendary alternative newspaper, the Village Voice.
From the first notes of their charmed meeting-which James had delayed because of fears of venturing all the way across the city from the Upper West Side to meet an unknown guitar player-their musical chemistry was instant. A few years later, in 1997, Smith set aside the big band, pared down to a duo with James, the pair found a bass player, and the Hot Club of Cowtown was born.
Thirty years on, the Hot Club of Cowtown remains the world's most globe-trotting hot jazz and Western swing power trio and continues to surprise and delight with its trademark "arsenal full of technique and joy, Uon Caramanica, New York Times).
