FURTHER DEFINITIONS

Further Definitions is a septet playing the music of Benny Carter and others written for four
saxophones and a rhythm section. Performers include Scott Burns, Dan Nicholson, Kevin Kizer,
Chris Lega, Joey Skoch, Dennis Carroll, and George Fludas.

BACKGROUND

In November 1961, jazz legend Benny Carter assembled a stellar group featuring top New York
saxophonists Coleman Hawkins, Phil Woods, Charlie Rouse, and himself (as performer and
arranger), and a rhythm section that included jazz legends Joe Jones on drums and Jimmy
Garrison on bass. Together, they created the iconic album “Further Definitions,” which was
celebrated at the time for Benny’s writing, ensemble work, and the solos of Hawkins, Rouse,
Woods, and Carter. The instrumentation was somewhat unusual for the day—just a sax section
with rhythm— but it worked and produced a great album.
Luckily, that music was preserved and will be performed tonight, along with other recent
arrangements written for the same instrumentation by Chicago saxophonists—Scott Burns, Dan
Nicholson, Kevin Kizer, and Chris Lega—alongside a rhythm section featuring Joey Skoch,
Dennis Carroll, and George Fludas.
