Formed in Dekalb, IL in 1983, The Service was a scrappy bunch that toured the country in a Dodge van for many years. Some people compared them to The Replacements because of their loose irreverent style, but they actually had a more diverse and nuanced sound with the sounds of keyboards and horns occasionally. The Service members Kenn Goodman and Rick Mosher founded the Pravda Records label in 1984.
