POP UP DETAILS

The Nick’s pop-up is the go to place for those who want to revel in holiday cheer, have a nostalgic experience, enjoy a craft cocktail and listen to top-notch jazz. Doors open at 6 pm, a screening of the movie "It's a Wonderful Life" from 7:30-9:30 pm and local jazz musicians playing classic Christmas songs following the film. Tonight's music is Ken Goodman and Ralph Baunel from Expo '76.

Nick’s is the bar that exists in the world that George Bailey doesn't exist in. It’s a juke joint atmosphere, where they “serve hard drinks.... for men who want to get drunk fast.” Though the bartenders won’t be as surly as Nick, the Christmas time party atmosphere will be the same.

Nick’s will feature a specific cocktail menu inspired by the movie. The Roosevelt Room will offer 4-5 custom cocktails that reflect the movie. These cocktails range from a “flaming rum punch” to original creations like “Zu-Zu’s Petals.” The cocktails will be only available those specific Wednesdays in December.

Roosevelt Room’s transformation of the SideBar will include specific “It’s a Wonderful life” tropes. For example an old timey register that “Gives out wings” when you ring on it, cocktails named after characters, a group singing of Auld Lang Syne and a raffle at the end of the night conducted from a giant wicker basket. And a general heart-warming Christmas time cheer feeling.

As for music, the organizers will take a few liberties. Instead of the “barrel house piano,” featured in Nick’s with people dancing in the aisles, a screening of the movie "It's a Wonderful Life" from 7:30-10 pm and local jazz musicians plaaying classic Christmas songs from 10-11:30 p.m.

The Roosevelt Room is a collaboration of three veteran Chicago (Berwyn) bartenders who are dedicated to upholding the classic bar experience with a modern twist. They have experience in creating pop-ups, custom cocktail menus, private parties, menu consulting, and much more throughout the Chicago area. For more information follow them on instagram @rveltroom or email rveltroom@gmail.com

As an added bonus for the grand finale of our “It’s a Wonderful Life” Pop-Up on Dec. 27, we’ve added a performance by Chicago’s classic jazz band The Fat Babies in the nightclub immediately following the film. The performance is sponsored by Community Bank of Oak Park River Forest, or as Jimmy Stewart’s George Bailey would call it, our local “Building and Loan.”
